Weekly PC Maintenance
It is hard to imagine a machine that works harder than your computer. Almost every activity within the computer involves using circuits to RAM chips, Hard Drives, and Monitors.

Even when all appears to be working correctly, things can be slowly going wrong. As we use computers from week to week, they clog up with useless files.

Conditions such as excessive files in your temporary directory, or large browser caches, not only clutter your hard drive but also can actually cause your system to run slower.

Just as scheduled checkups by your doctor will keep you happy and healthy; a well-established weekly maintenance program will go a long way to keeping your computer running smooth. We recommend that you check for the conditions described below at least once a week.

1. Run Scan-disk on your Hard drive
Even if your hard drive seems to be working perfectly you are not immune to disk headaches.
2. Clearing out Temporary Files
Windows 95 normally requires at least 500MB of space for the memory swap file. As available space drops below this limit, your computer will appear to run slower.
3. Removing WAV Files
If you do not have a sound card in your system, you do not need WAV files.
4. Removing Games
This procedure not required on a weekly basis.
5. Running Defrag
A file cab become fragmented when it is too large for your computer to store in a single sector on a disk.
6. Removing Icons from Startup Folder
As we load new programs on our computer, any number of application (program) icons and utilities are automatically added to the Start Menu. Having too many items in the Startup folder can use up system resources and cause your computer to run slow.
7. Removing Extra Fonts
As we load new programs on our computer, any number of application (program) icons and utilities are automatically added to the Start Menu. Having too many items in the Startup folder can use up system resources and cause your computer to run slow.

Removing Icons from Startup Folder
When we were using Windows 3.11 a "Startup Group" was usually found on the windows desktop. If we wanted a program such as Microsoft Word to start as soon as we opened windows, we would place a copy of the ICON in this group. Windows 95 has a similar folder called startup located in the start menu. To remove some of the unwanted icons follow the steps

  1. With the left mouse button click once on the Start button.

  2. While still holding down the left mouse button, slide the cursor to the settings entry. This opens the next level of menus.

  3. Select the task bar entry and release the mouse button. This opens the Task bar properties dialog box.

  4. From the Task bar Properties box select the "START MENU tab.

  5. Click once on the "Remove Button". This brings up the "Remove Shortcuts/Folders dialog box.

  6. In the Remove Shortcuts/Folders dialog box move the slide bar down until you see the "StartUp" folder. Click on the + sign to expand the folder.

  7. Click on the item you which to remove and click on the remove button.

  8. Once you have removed the desired icons close all dialog boxes and restart your computer.

Clearing out temp files
As we said, conditions such as excessive files in your temporary directory, or large browser caches, not only clutter your hard drive but also can actually cause your system to run slower. The reason excessive files can cause a slow down is that Windows 95 normally requires at least 500MB of space for the memory swap file. As available space drops below this limit, your computer will appear to run slower. This is especially true if you are accustomed to using memory intensive programs like Microsoft PowerPoint. To find and remove these files follow the steps below:

  1. Click on your start button and go up to "FIND", select "FILES AND FOLDERS"

  2. Type in the block "named" the file type you want to search for, (*. TMP or *. CHK)

  3. Select the name of one file with that extension, click the "edit" pull down menu, "select all"

  4. Then press the delete key on the keyboard, press yes to send it to recycle bin.

Temporary Internet Files - How you remove temp Internet files depends on the browser that you use:
  • Internet Explorer

    1. In Internet explorer, click on the "view" pull down menu and select "Internet options"

    2. This brings up the general tab, click on the "delete files" button, and click ok to confirm.

  • Netscape Browser

    1. In Netscape, click the "edit" pull down, select preferences

    2. On the left-hand side, double click on the word "Advanced", under it should be a "cache" option.

    3. Click once on the word cache, on the right-hand side click on the "clear DISK cache" button.

Removing WAV files
Audio sounds are stored in your computer by using a special file format similar to that used on a music CD. Sound is digitized and stored into a file with a .wav extension.

If you do not have a sound card in your computer, these files are only taking up space. Space that can be used for other data files.

Since these files vary in size from a few bytes to thousands of bytes, It is a good idea to delete as many as you can.

  1. Click on your start button and go up to "FIND", select "FILES AND FOLDERS",

  2. Type in the block "named" the file type you want to search for,
    (*. WAV)

  3. Select the name of one file with that extension, click the "edit" pull down menu, "select all"

  4. Then press the delete key on the keyboard, press yes to send it to recycle bin.

Remove any games

Although this procedure is not required on a weekly basis, it should be done one time. If your system is at work, be aware that playing games on company time is normally not unauthorized.

If your system is a home system, be aeare that games take up a lot of space on your hard drive. Follow these simple instruction to clean all games off your computer.

  1. Go into the control panel, and into the icon named "Add/Remove Programs"

  2. The names of the programs are in alphabetical order,

  3. If you see the name of the game, you can highlight the name and click "add/remove" button

  4. If not… click on the windows setup tab, double-click on the word "Accessories"

  5. Then click once on the check mark next to "games", the check mark will be removed

  6. Click ok, for Accessories window

  7. Then click apply, for the Add/Remove programs window.

Running Scan disk   (Same as Norton Disk Doctor)
Poorly written software (programs) and viruses can cause you to loose data. The file system on your hard drive (File Allocation Table or FAT) can become corrupted and lose track of where segments of you files are stored. If the location is accidentally overwritten the file can be deleted or lose some of its data. To prevent this we suggest you run Microsoft's Scan Disk on a weekly basis.

Tips -

  • If you want to specify how Scan disk repairs any errors it finds, make sure the Automatically Fix Errors box is not checked.

  • For Help on an item in the main Scan disk screen, use your right mouse button to click the item, and then click the What's This? command.

  • For Help on an item in the Scan disk Advanced Options dialog box, click at the top of the dialog box, and then click the item.

  1. With the left mouse button click once on the Start button.

  2. While still holding down the left mouse button, slide the cursor to the "Programs" entry. This opens the next level of menus.

  3. Move the cursor until the "Accessories" entry is highlighted and click once. You will see the next level of menus appear. Move the cursor over to the "Systems Tools" entry this opens the next level. Move the cursor over the "Scan disk" entry and click once. This will start Scan disk..

  4. Select the drive you want to scan and click on the start button.

Running Defrag    (Same as Norton Speed Disk)

A file is fragmented when it becomes too large for your computer to store in a single location on a disk. When this happens, your computer splits the file up and stores it in pieces. You can use fragmented files, but it takes your computer longer to access them.

Disk Defragmenter speeds up disk access by rearranging the files and free space on your computer, so files are stored in contiguous units and free space is consolidated in one contiguous block. While Windows defragments your disk, you can safely use your computer to carry out other tasks. However, your computer will operate more slowly. To temporarily stop Disk Defragmenter so you can run other programs at full speed, click Pause.

  • With the left mouse button click once on the Start button.

  • While still holding down the left mouse button, slide the cursor to the "Programs" entry. This opens the next level of menus.

  • Move the cursor until the "Accessories" entry is highlighted and click once. You will see the next level of menus appear. Move the cursor over to the "Systems Tools" entry this opens the next level. Move the cursor over the "Disk Defragmenter" entry and click once. This will start Defrag

  • Select the drive you want to scan and click on the start button.

      Removing Fonts
Finally loading too many unused fonts in Windows 95 can use up system resources and cause you computer to boot too slow. It's a good idea to clean out as many fonts as possible. To remove unwanted fonts:
      1. With the left mouse button click once on the Start button.

      2. While still holding down the left mouse button, slide the cursor to the "Settings" entry. This opens the next level of menus.

      3. Move the cursor to the right over the "Settings" entry and release the mouse button. This will open the control panel.

      4. Find the icon for fonts and double-click on it. This will open the font folder.

      5. By clicking on the view drop-down menu you can select different types of views for this folder.

      6. You can view what each font looks like by double-clicking on the name of the font.

      7. You can print out a test sheet by clicking on the print button.

      8. To delete a font just right-click over the name and select "delete"
